Watch Out for the Steep Jumps

Klaviyo's pricing does not scale linearly. The biggest surprise hits at the 15,001 to 20,000 tier, where the price jumps from $200 to $350 per month, a $150 increase for just 5,000 more contacts. That is a 75% price hike. By comparison, the jump from 10,001 to 15,000 contacts is only $50 (from $150 to $200). If your list is approaching 15,000 contacts, budget for the $350 tier because you will hit it faster than you expect as your store grows.

SMS and MMS Pricing

Klaviyo's SMS pricing runs on a credit system that adds to your email plan cost.

How Credits Work

  • 1 US domestic SMS = 1 credit ($0.01 to $0.015 each)
  • 1 MMS = 3 credits ($0.03 to $0.04 each)
  • International SMS = 3 to 7 credits depending on country
  • Minimum SMS package: $15/mo for 1,250 credits
  • Free plan includes 150 SMS credits (enough for ~150 texts)

SMS Can Exceed Email Costs

For high-volume SMS senders, the credit costs add up quickly. A store with 10,000 contacts sending 4 SMS campaigns per month (40,000 messages) would spend roughly $480 per month on SMS credits alone, more than triple the $150 email plan cost at the same contact count.

The economics of SMS marketing still tend to work out because SMS open rates average 98% versus 20 to 25% for email, and SMS click-through rates are 5 to 10 times higher. E-commerce stores typically see $0.10 to $0.50 in revenue per SMS sent, meaning a $0.01 per message cost yields a 10x to 50x return.

However, not every store needs SMS. If your average order value is under $30 or your customers skew older (55+), email alone may be more cost-effective. For a deeper breakdown of SMS costs, see our dedicated SMS pricing page.

Cost Per Email Sent

Klaviyo's effective cost per email depends on how many emails you send relative to your contact count.

Consider a store with 10,000 contacts sending 8 email campaigns per month. That is 80,000 emails per month at a cost of $150, which works out to $0.00188 per email. Compare that to Mailchimp at a similar volume, which would cost $100 per month on their Standard plan for 10,000 contacts, giving a per-email cost of $0.00125.

Klaviyo costs roughly 50% more per email than Mailchimp at the 10,000-contact tier. But this comparison misses the revenue side of the equation. Klaviyo's superior segmentation and automation for e-commerce stores tends to generate higher revenue per email. Klaviyo reports that their average customer generates $85 per dollar spent on the platform. If your email program drives $12,750 per month in revenue (at the $150 plan), you are paying just 1.2% of email-attributed revenue for the platform.

The key metric to watch is not cost per email but revenue per email. If Klaviyo generates $0.15 per email while a cheaper platform generates $0.10, the $50 per month premium more than pays for itself. Run both platforms in a 90-day split test if you are unsure. Most stores that switch from Mailchimp to Klaviyo see a 20 to 30% lift in email revenue from abandoned cart flows alone.

When Klaviyo Gets Too Expensive

Consider Switching If:

  • Your list exceeds 25,000 contacts and revenue per subscriber is below $0.20 per month
  • You are a non-e-commerce business (SaaS, services, content) paying for features you do not use
  • Your email revenue has plateaued and Klaviyo's advanced features are not making a measurable difference
  • You spend more on SMS credits than email and would benefit from a dedicated SMS platform like Attentive
  • Your team does not have time to build the advanced automations that justify Klaviyo's premium pricing

Klaviyo Pays for Itself If:

  • You run a Shopify or WooCommerce store doing over $500K per year in revenue
  • Revenue per subscriber exceeds $0.50 per month and you leverage Klaviyo's predictive analytics
  • You actively use 5+ automation flows (welcome, abandoned cart, browse abandonment, post-purchase, win-back)
  • Your team builds segments based on RFM scores, predicted lifetime value, and churn risk
  • You combine email and SMS in coordinated flows where timing and channel selection matter

Klaviyo Free Plan: What You Actually Get

Klaviyo's free tier is surprisingly generous compared to Mailchimp's gutted free plan.

Included on Free

  • +250 active profiles
  • +500 email sends per month
  • +150 free SMS/MMS credits
  • +All email templates (no premium tier lockout)
  • +All automation flows including abandoned cart
  • +Built-in CRM with customer profiles
  • +Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce integrations
  • +Segmentation and A/B testing
  • +Basic reporting and analytics
  • +Pop-up and embedded signup forms

Limitations on Free

  • -Klaviyo branding on all emails
  • -Email support only (no live chat)
  • -Limited to 500 sends per month total
  • -No predictive analytics or AI features
  • -No advanced reporting or custom dashboards
  • -No dedicated IP address
  • -No priority sending infrastructure

Verdict: The free plan is ideal for new Shopify stores still building their list. You get access to all the automation flows that drive revenue (abandoned cart, welcome series, post-purchase), which is something Mailchimp restricts to paid tiers. Most stores outgrow the 250-contact limit within 1 to 3 months of launch, at which point the $20 per month entry price is reasonable. The smart move is to set up your flows while you are on free so they are ready to generate revenue the moment you upgrade.

Klaviyo vs Competitors at Scale

Side-by-side monthly pricing at five common list sizes. All prices reflect standard/recommended tiers as of March 2026.

100,000$1,380$605$720$687$Custom$65

Key takeaway: Klaviyo is consistently the most expensive option at every tier. The question is whether the price premium translates to more revenue. For e-commerce stores, the answer is usually yes. Klaviyo's deep Shopify integration, predictive analytics, and revenue attribution give you tools that Mailchimp and Brevo simply do not offer. For a detailed head-to-head, read our Klaviyo vs Mailchimp comparison. Note that Brevo uses an email volume model rather than a contact-based model, which is why their pricing stays flat across contact tiers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Klaviyo free for small lists?
Yes. Klaviyo offers a free plan for up to 250 active profiles. On the free tier you get 500 email sends per month, 150 free SMS credits, access to all email templates, all automation flows (including abandoned cart, welcome series, and post-purchase flows), and the built-in CRM. The main limitation is that your emails will include Klaviyo branding. Once you exceed 250 active profiles, you must upgrade to a paid plan starting at $20 per month for up to 500 contacts.
Does Klaviyo charge for unsubscribed contacts?
Klaviyo charges based on active profiles. An active profile is anyone who has not been suppressed or deleted. If a contact unsubscribes, they are moved to the suppressed list and do not count toward your billing limit. However, profiles that have never engaged but remain on your list do count as active. You should regularly clean your list by suppressing contacts who have not opened an email in 6 to 12 months to keep costs down.
Does Klaviyo offer annual billing discounts?
No. Unlike many SaaS platforms, Klaviyo does not offer discounted annual billing. All plans are billed month-to-month with no long-term contract required. You can upgrade, downgrade, or cancel at any time. This is actually an advantage for seasonal e-commerce businesses that may have large list fluctuations throughout the year.
How does Klaviyo's Shopify integration work?
Klaviyo's Shopify integration is free and built into the platform. It syncs your entire Shopify product catalog, customer purchase history, browsing behavior, and order data in real-time. This powers features like abandoned cart flows that trigger based on actual cart contents, post-purchase sequences timed to delivery dates, browse abandonment emails, predictive analytics (expected next order date, predicted lifetime value, churn risk score), and product recommendation blocks that pull from your catalog. No third-party connector or additional cost is needed.
How does Klaviyo compare to Mailchimp on price?
At lower contact counts (under 5,000), Mailchimp Standard is slightly cheaper. At 2,500 contacts, Mailchimp Standard costs about $40 per month compared to Klaviyo at $60 per month. However, at higher volumes the gap narrows and sometimes reverses. At 50,000 contacts, Mailchimp Standard costs roughly $350 per month while Klaviyo costs $720 per month. The price difference is significant at scale, but Klaviyo users frequently report higher revenue per email due to better segmentation and automation for e-commerce, which can justify the premium.
Can I export my data if I leave Klaviyo?
Yes. Klaviyo allows you to export all your contact data, list segments, campaign history, and flow performance data as CSV files at any time. Your email templates can be exported as HTML. There is no lock-in or export fee. However, you will need to rebuild your automation flows manually in your new platform, which typically takes 10 to 20 hours for a moderately complex setup with 5 to 10 active flows.
What happens if I go over my contact limit mid-month?
Klaviyo automatically upgrades you to the next pricing tier when your active profile count exceeds your current plan limit. This happens immediately and the prorated difference is charged to your payment method. There is no grace period or overage notification before the upgrade. If you expect a large influx of contacts (from a product launch or holiday season), plan your budget around the next tier up to avoid surprises.
Is Klaviyo worth the price compared to cheaper alternatives?
It depends on your use case. For e-commerce stores on Shopify or WooCommerce doing more than $500,000 in annual revenue, Klaviyo is often worth the premium because its deep product data integration, predictive analytics, and advanced segmentation (RFM scoring, predicted lifetime value, churn risk) typically generate 20 to 30% more email revenue than generic platforms. For non-e-commerce businesses like content sites, service businesses, or SaaS companies, Klaviyo is likely overpriced and a tool like Mailchimp, ActiveCampaign, or Brevo would serve you better for less money.
