Watch Out for the Steep Jumps
Klaviyo's pricing does not scale linearly. The biggest surprise hits at the 15,001 to 20,000 tier, where the price jumps from $200 to $350 per month, a $150 increase for just 5,000 more contacts. That is a 75% price hike. By comparison, the jump from 10,001 to 15,000 contacts is only $50 (from $150 to $200). If your list is approaching 15,000 contacts, budget for the $350 tier because you will hit it faster than you expect as your store grows.
SMS and MMS Pricing
Klaviyo's SMS pricing runs on a credit system that adds to your email plan cost.
How Credits Work
- 1 US domestic SMS = 1 credit ($0.01 to $0.015 each)
- 1 MMS = 3 credits ($0.03 to $0.04 each)
- International SMS = 3 to 7 credits depending on country
- Minimum SMS package: $15/mo for 1,250 credits
- Free plan includes 150 SMS credits (enough for ~150 texts)
SMS Can Exceed Email Costs
For high-volume SMS senders, the credit costs add up quickly. A store with 10,000 contacts sending 4 SMS campaigns per month (40,000 messages) would spend roughly $480 per month on SMS credits alone, more than triple the $150 email plan cost at the same contact count.
The economics of SMS marketing still tend to work out because SMS open rates average 98% versus 20 to 25% for email, and SMS click-through rates are 5 to 10 times higher. E-commerce stores typically see $0.10 to $0.50 in revenue per SMS sent, meaning a $0.01 per message cost yields a 10x to 50x return.

Cost Per Email Sent
Klaviyo's effective cost per email depends on how many emails you send relative to your contact count.
Consider a store with 10,000 contacts sending 8 email campaigns per month. That is 80,000 emails per month at a cost of $150, which works out to $0.00188 per email. Compare that to Mailchimp at a similar volume, which would cost $100 per month on their Standard plan for 10,000 contacts, giving a per-email cost of $0.00125.
Klaviyo costs roughly 50% more per email than Mailchimp at the 10,000-contact tier. But this comparison misses the revenue side of the equation. Klaviyo's superior segmentation and automation for e-commerce stores tends to generate higher revenue per email. Klaviyo reports that their average customer generates $85 per dollar spent on the platform. If your email program drives $12,750 per month in revenue (at the $150 plan), you are paying just 1.2% of email-attributed revenue for the platform.
The key metric to watch is not cost per email but revenue per email. If Klaviyo generates $0.15 per email while a cheaper platform generates $0.10, the $50 per month premium more than pays for itself. Run both platforms in a 90-day split test if you are unsure. Most stores that switch from Mailchimp to Klaviyo see a 20 to 30% lift in email revenue from abandoned cart flows alone.
When Klaviyo Gets Too Expensive
Consider Switching If:
- Your list exceeds 25,000 contacts and revenue per subscriber is below $0.20 per month
- You are a non-e-commerce business (SaaS, services, content) paying for features you do not use

Verdict: The free plan is ideal for new Shopify stores still building their list. You get access to all the automation flows that drive revenue (abandoned cart, welcome series, post-purchase), which is something Mailchimp restricts to paid tiers. Most stores outgrow the 250-contact limit within 1 to 3 months of launch, at which point the $20 per month entry price is reasonable. The smart move is to set up your flows while you are on free so they are ready to generate revenue the moment you upgrade.
